Biidaasige Park (translates to ‘sunlight shines towards us’) is now open in the Toronto Portlands, and we go with friends to have a look. A bit of background. Many years ago the Don River was diverted into the Keating Channel at its mouth into Lake Ontario. The diverted water needed to make a 90 degree turn which backed up and flooded the local expressway called the Don Valley Parkway, every time there was a major rainfall. Toronto, Ontario and Federal money totalling over $1 billion is funding a new flood friendly and eco friendly re-diversion of the river with a new naturalized river mouth and man-made islands and lagoons. And a future community with housing and such. Biidaasige Park is part of this.
We all agree that Biidaasige Park is a go to place for children of all ages. The walking trails provide great views of Lake Ontario, downtown Toronto and the Park itself, and are accessable. We see spots for fishing and apparently bass, perch and salmon are lurking around . Also we see launching points for canoes and kayaks.

The kids-of-all-ages playground is extensive and we try out the zipline and water games.

Parking is right across the street on Commissioners Drive.
For lunch we try out the Cherry Street BBQ. Excellent bbq, extensive beer and cider options and a nice outdoor patio. And it is just a few metres from the parking area for the Park.

Then, we decide to do a mini tour of the Portlands. Our first stop is the access point to the Tom Thompson Park and the Leslie Spit, to scope it out for a future bike ride with grandkids. Our second stop is the Cherry Beach Dog Park – several acres for dogs to run around and take a dip in Lake Ontario, and with a nice view back to Downtown Toronto.
We finish our day with Happy Hour on the patio at Anego’s on Market Street west of the St Lawrence Market. Their $7 margaritas go down very easily and we are happy.
All and all, a great way to spend a day in Toronto.
