For Cathy and me, San Juan, Puerto Rico is a huge surprise. We take a free walking tour starting at the Plaza Colon in the Old Town and love it. Our guide centers her tour on Peurto Rican popular culture and it’s influences. We sing and dance along, with even a mini salsa lesson. Of course, we also walk the narrow laneways paved with ‘blue’ granite and take in views of the large Spanish forts that circle the Old Town.
We have taken free walking tours in other cities like Lisbon, and we always walk away impressed. For the price of a gratuity, we discover a side of the city that is more than churches and forts.
