Eat like a local in Hilton Head, South Carolina

This year a theme of our visit to Hilton Head Island is to eat like a local.  Here are three places that Cathy and I would recommend.

Up the Creek Pub and Grill

We eat at this small local that is beside the Broad Creek Marina and the more touristy and expensive Fish Camp on Broad Creek.  The fellow who rents out the kayaks/paddleboards at the Marina pointed us to Up the Creek Pub and Grill as his favourite.  Out doors on the patio deck with a great view over the marshes, some local beer and plates of fried oysters, crab cake, fish tacos – you just can’t beat it.

Hudson’s Seafood House on  the Docks

Hudson’s was our choice for lunch on a rainy day.  We score a window table with a great view over the marshes.  This restaurant is wildly popular with locals and with tourists as well in the evening with long lineups, however lunch had a local and relaxed vibe.  What makes this place special is that it has its own fishing boats and the menu features what they catch.  Our food choices were confirmed by our waiter as local favourites – gumbos, fried green tomatos, steamed peel your own shrimp, and crab cakes.

Bullies BBQ

We always come back to Bullies for our fix of BBQ.  We order takeout, the Family Dinner for 3 people plus an order of baked beans.  The three of us enjoy two dinners of BBQ plus some sandwich fixings – so a great value.  We waited only minutes for our takeout, and while waiting, we add our names to the signature wall under the watchful eye of Bully.

And if you are returning home to the Toronto area and overnight in Fairmont, West Virginia, try:

DJ’s 50’s and 60’s Diner

DJ’s is an authentic throwback to the Diner era.  Comfort food is the focus, and gravy smothered chicken or beef sandwiches are a favourite.
