The New River Gorge National Park – our favourite stop on the drive between Toronto and Hilton Head

Each year, Cathy and I drive between Toronto and Hilton Head, South Carolina.  The New River Gorge in the southern West Virginia is our favourite mid-point stop on this 1000 mile trip.

The New River Gorge Bridge is the largest span steel  bridge in the Western Hemisphere.  As the third highest in the US,  it comes with a big view of the Gorge.

What Cathy and I like to do is drive the old road down into the Gorge.  It is called the   Fayette Station Road, that starts at the Visitor Centre and is a series of one way switchbacks down to the river.

Most times we see white water rafts finishing off their day.

Then,  we like to join the locals at  El Rio Mexican Restaurant in Oak Hill for some excellent traditional Mexican food.  However on this trip we try the Fosters Main Street Tavern  in downtown Beckley.  This restaurant is certainly a visual experience.

What we have not done is the walk on the narrow gangway under the bridge deck.  Maybe next time.
