Cathy and I drive the back roads along the North Shore of Lake Erie from Port Stanley to Amherstburg. Just a few miles south of the busy Highway 401, this route takes us through small lakeside towns, vineyards, beaches and farmer’s markets.
To us, it feels like Prince Edward County and Niagara-on-the-Lake were 15 years ago – mellow, not crowded, very welcoming. Driving time from Toronto is about 3 hours . We can’t believe that we have never been here before. We will be back.
Our first stop is GT’s on the Beach in Port Stanley for some locally caught perch and pickerel (walleye). Mmmm, yummy. We over night at the Erie-O Motel and Marina in Erieau, Ontario. Basic and clean, and right on the water. A magnet for RV’ers and boaters in the summer and ice fishermen in the winter.
Next day we poke our way west along the lake. Lunch is at  View Pointe Estate Winery . Try the pickerel (walleye) and perch tacos. We also visit  Sprucewood Shores Winery for a tasting and to take in the expansive view over Lake Erie. Along the way, we buy some excellent every day wines at really affordable price points.  You will find more about the various wineries at Lake Erie wine country
Next we book into the Bondy House Bed and Breakfast  in Amherstburg for two nights. The hosts Merv and Carolyn are wonderful and direct us to excellent local restaurants and historic sites. Stay tuned for more about the amazing history of Amherstburg in our next blog.
Here are some pictures we took along the way.
