We also hike the foothills of Athens
As Cathy and I had visited the Acropolis and other antiquities of Athens as college students, we decide to take the road less traveled and hike in the foothills. Our destination is a small stone house and shrine where the Virgin Mary lived out her last days, or so it is believed. The climb is very steep and overgrown. We would rate the hike as advanced, not moderate as advertised.We really believed our guide lost the trail. This turns out to be an interesting day, but not something we would do again.
Background: Cruising the Eastern Meditteranean
Cathy and I join friends for a cruise around the Eastern Meditteranean, on the Celebrity Galaxy. We start and end in Rome’s port Civitavecchia. First we cruise around Greece to the islands of Mykonos, Rhodes and Santorini. In Turkey we spend time in Istanbul and Ephesus. Next, stops in Athens, Greece and Naples, Italy, and back to Civitavecchia. During the 12 day trip, we have 2 sea days as well. We took ship sponsored excursions most days and with so many things to see, we were well worn out by days end.
Cathy and I spent time kicking around these areas when we were students and had not yet met. Those trips were done on the skinny. For this trip, we had a nice balcony cabin in concierge class. We played dress-up most nights, and challenged the bartenders to come up with a martini each night that matched the ladies dresses. The upside of getting older.
