How I am Prep’ing for my 2024 Ride2Conquer Cancer

It’s Feb 9, 2024 and I am going to share three milestones as I prep towards my June 2024 Ride2Conquer Cancer.  Just to remind you, this Ride is 2 days, 220 km between Toronto and Niagara Falls, over 3500 riders and a Ride goal of $20 million for cancer research.

First I have hit 85% of my personal donation goal of $2500.  Thank you to all you awesome people for your generous donations.  For those of you who may want to donate, click on Ride2Conquer , click on Donate and then on Joe Molnar.

Second, my twin brother is going to ride with us this year.  What a cool thing for two 73 year olds to be doing on a June weekend.  Here is the two of us on a ski trip.  He is the good looking guy on the right.  That is us holding a wolverine.

And third, I had the unexpected pleasure of doing an outdoor ride today along Toronto’s Waterfront Trails.  This morning it was warmer in Toronto (6 C) than in Phoenix.  So I altered my training regime and went for an outside ride.

You may be interested in my training regime.  This year I am training for the June Ride and also for a mini-triathlon (Subaru Series) in late August.  I am also influenced by a book that I am reading titled ‘Outlive – The Science & Art of Longevity’.  My major takeaway so far is that exercise is the most important factor for extending my  life span and my health span.  And I should do a range of training aimed at accomplishing a Centenarian Decathlon, ie train through a bunch of different activities and don’t become single minded about any one of these.  The goals are strength, endurance, balance and resiliency.

So between now and April,  I am doing cross training (treadmill, elliptical, stationary bike and rowing) along with weights and yoga.  From April to the June Ride, I will shift my focus to riding and kayaking at our cottage on Stoney Lake.  After my Ride and leading to the Triathlon, I will focus on swimming, riding and running.  I find that during a Triathlon, my transition from one discipline to the next is hard to do and I am slow,  and so I am going to practice that as well.

Any suggestions of your go-to activities are welcome.
