Several years ago I did some spring-time white-water training at Palmer Rapids for a subsequent week of white water kayaking in northern Quebec. Cathy and I returned on a beautiful Sunday afternoon to watch the action. Being August, the water levels are lower in the Madawaska River and so the rapids are very kid friendly.
Palmer Rapids is less than 1 hour north of Bancroft, and is a easy day trip on secondary highways from our cottage on Stoney Lake. Along the way, we enjoyed an excellent meal and some local brew at the Bancroft Brew Pub. In addition, we visited the Princess Sodalite Mine Rock Shop north east of Bancroft. Bancroft is Canada’s mineral capital. Our objective was to scope out different types of local rock that we can crush to use as highlights in some live-edge pine furniture that we are making this fall. We selected a few pieces of pyrite (fool’s gold) and quartz, and will do some experimentation before we buy in quantity.
